Your LOCAL woodwind and brass instrument repair specialist

buy-localBrassWindFix have had instruments arrive in the workshop all the way from London, Manchester and Leeds.  We are pleased to say that BrassWindFix have been in business for over 5 years and we have done very little to no advertising  to date with the majority of work received via word of mouth and recommendation.  This is fantastic and is a great testment to the high workmanship of Justin Pavey.

However, although BrassWindFix have carried out many repairs and servicing on woodwind and brass instruments from far afield, we thought it was time we let the local residents know we are here too!

So…… local people…. here we are!

BrassWindFix are your local woodwind and brass repair specialist.  It’s not just servicing and repairing of instruments!  BrassWindFix also have accessories for sale and second hand instruments.  So whatever your musical needs please get in contact – if we haven’t got it in stock then we can always source whatever you need for you!

A Buccin

BrassWindFix had never heard or seen this instrument/trombone before it arrived in the workshop.  A unique instrument that sounds a mixture of a trombone and french horn.

A buccin (dragonhead trombone) was originally popular in French military bands from 1810-1845 with the designs becoming more and more elaborate and colourful as time went on.  The steel tongue moves with the vibrations produced through the instrument. Sadly their popularity was not sustainable and they fell out of fashion.

At soft volumes the instrument produces a very warm, delicate sound due to the bell being made of hammered tin or very thin brass. It is also capable of an extreme fortissimo. Not everyone agrees on how to pronounce the name of the instrument, with variants including “boo-san”, “bue-san”, “boo-seen” and “buck-sin.”

This instrument was difficult to play as the extremely large and heavy head of the dragon made the stabilty of the instrument difficult to handle.  Justin at BrassWindFix soldered a hand-support to balance the instrument out so the client could comfortably hold and play the instrument.  Another extremely satisfied client at BrassWindFix!
